LakePoint Development Lands the “White Shark”

Greg Norman, the world famous golfer known as the "Great White Shark," is launching a golf academy at the giant LakePoint sports complex.

Greg Norman Golf Course Design will design the 30-acre project at LakePoint, northwest of Atlanta, to include a full-service practice range, a nine-hole par 3 course, and coaching and instruction.

It will be similar to the Greg Norman Academy in Myrtle Beach, S.C., one of the nation’s largest.

The Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy at LakePoint will also include features such as video equipment and swing analysis technology; custom club fitting technology; a Cybex equipped gym; and practice greens, bunkers and practice tees.

LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center is a more than 1,000-acre planned development in Bartow County, about 45 minutes northwest of the city.

This year the project gained momentum. It landed Bass Pro Shops, which bought a 14-acre site overlooking Interstate 75.

LakePoint is being billed as the nation’s biggest sports vacation destination. It’s also seen as a showcase for youth sports and education programs.

The Coca-Cola Co. chose LakePoint for its first-ever “Powerade Sports Safety Hydration Lab. The development served as a stage for Coke to enter the national debate on concussions and heat-related illnesses in youth sports — and grab more market share from rival PepsiCo Inc. LakePoint is different than any facility in the world, because it offers instruction, education and on-the-field experiences in so many different sports disciplines, Norman said.
