School Enrollment Remains Steady

The Bartow County School System is offering multiple learning opportunities at the Bartow County College and Career Academy. CEO Paul Sabin says enrollment is remaining steady within the various areas of the multi-use facility.

“We have the College and Career Academy; we have the Virtual Academy which is where students work on a digital curriculum and they can do credit recovery and actually get new credit as well depending on their circumstance ...; and we also have the Transitional Academy, so students placed in there for one reason or another they work in a virtual lab as well and they come each day for about three hours,” Sabin said.

He said the College and Career Academy is hosting a little more than 200 students. The Transitional Academy has about 30 students and the Virtual Academy has 25 students taking 88 courses overall.

“We have had several students earn their diploma through the Virtual Academy ... and it’s really provided an opportunity for students with unique situations,” Sabin said.

While the Transitional Academy and Virtual Academy have been in operation for two years, the College and Career Academy opened its doors to students Aug. 7. In addition to current course offerings, some of which allow students to receive college credit by taking courses from Chattahoochee Technical College and Georgia Highlands College, Sabin said he hopes the academy will be able to offer online courses through those colleges next semester.

“Last year we had three students enrolled with Chattahoochee Tech ... and this year we have 25 students coming here and they are going to earn six semester hours the first semester and six semester hours the second semester for a total of 12 semester hours this year and our juniors can do the same thing next year, finishing out their high school career with 24 college credits,” Sabin said.

In other student population news, Bartow Superintendent John Harper said by the 10th day of school, Aug. 20, the system overall has 14,120 students. He reports Woodland High School has 1,701 students; Cass High School has 1,540; and Adairsville High School has 958.

Harper did not report any significant changes in population compared to 2012.

Cartersville City Schools Assistant Superintendent Ken Clouse also said there was no significant change in student population this year, adding the system was down about 25 students overall for a total of 4,203 students.

He reports Cartersville Primary School and Kids and Co. has 1,087 students; Cartersville Elementary School has 1,007 students; Cartersville Middle School has 987 students; and Cartersville High School has 1,122 students.
